Nostalgia of the Port
Original Gouache Painting | 93 × 46 cm Size | Framed in a Modern Grey Frame
After rounding Cape Egmont aboard our 34-foot sailing vessel—the first of 13 capes on our circumnavigation of the North Island—we faced steep seas and a full day of hand-steering through challenging conditions. Tired and weather-worn, I found comfort in the familiar silhouettes of Paritutu Rock and the breakwater at “The Port” in New Plymouth.
As dusk settled, the harbour revealed its quiet magic, stirring memories of my childhood. Ngamotu Beach, once home to my grandparents’ beloved bach, became a beacon of belonging. Though the baches have long disappeared, the feeling remains—etched into the shoreline and into my soul.
This gouache piece captures that moment of return: the emotional pull of place, the resilience of memory, and the beauty of finding home after the sea.
